The Khibiny Mountains, located in the circumpolar region, is one of the oldest mountain ranges. Their history began more than three hundred million years ago when the Earth’s surface was still developing its basic shape. Until the beginning of the 20th century these severe yet strangely beautiful places belonged to the native inhabitants, the Sami people. Despite the cold weather, the advantages of living next to these ancient mountains is that there are many natural resources to be mined and processed, as well as many scientific-research institutes. Nowadays the Khibiny Mountains are familiar to those who love to travel and go on active vacations. They are a popular destination for both Russians and foreigners.
